MISSION

End forced child street begging in Senegal by 2040.

Approach

We deploy a human-centered and human rights-based approach. Rather than emphasizing the criminalization of Marabouts, we support them in their roles as teachers. We support Talibés staying in the Daaras but hold those institutions to reasonable standards. Our approach focuses not only on the quality of education but also protection of the rights of the Talibés. To create systemic change, our approach involves all stakeholders in the solution.

Outcomes

1. Increase accountability and responsibility surrounding the welfare of Talibés

2. Provide the public with accessible options to give alms responsibly

3. Provide the next generation of Senegalese leaders with knowledge, health, and faith

Our Partners

Thanks to our friends and family in Senegal, we are able to partner with Senegalese from all walks of life, from Marabouts, to local providers, to local officials. Our local partnerships ensure we are working to identify a solution that all stakeholders value. Families will be able to send their children to quality Daaras for free, knowing their sons will be safe from abuse, become strong in their faith, and grow into capable young men. Community care providers, already eager to help Talibés, will offer in-kind contributions to assist in raising and caring for the boys. Marabouts will embrace a social change that actively engages them in their role as Qur’anic teachers, and compensates them fairly for their value to society.

Pilot Activities

Pledge Program

We sponsor Daaras and Marabouts who pledge not to force their students to beg on the streets. All partner Daaras will receive financial support to continue operations without forced begging. Mansa Musa Institute will work with them to create income generating activities, such as a bus route that will collect fares, alms, and conduct critical community outreach.

Community Care Program

We partner with local Community Care Providers such as technical schools, women’s groups, and sports academies to supplement the Talibés’ religious education and care. Instead of begging, they’re learning. Instead of slipping through the cracks, they’re safely engaging with their communities.

Fundraising

Fundraising efforts and gifts from our donors ensure that Daaras are funded and children stay off of the streets. A $60 donation provides one student with food, clothing, and education for one month. Donations also allow for the Marabouts to make material improvements to their Daaras, ensuring the safety of the children in their care.
